Welcome! This is a website that everyone can build together. It's easy!

how to run our classThis is a featured page

what is this?

a wiki. not just a class website - an editable (not edible) website. all you have to do is join and you can start editing class notes, creating your own pages, help to create an ebook, and discussing with other students in the discussion forum.

open source math class:https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AX3J8HwmX59wZGQ0OXp2cjhfNTJoZmg0NHFneg

step 1:
read given colored text below - inspired by michael wesch's how we run our class, then research and share best ideas for the class.
"to some this may appear to be an unstructured class, but i believe it is structured for participation." (wesch)
exploration stage:
a) data upload - everyone finds something, submit, all read all of them
b) create a video trailer of what you plan to do - (think visually)

in a week - we'll put all trailers together to see what our plans are
first 1/3 of class
guided info on topics:
series of selected readings and some class notes
self-guided research: wesch was gone for this
a) put individual project descriptions on wiki page (summary of what you are planning to do)
b) synchronize projects
c) proposal making stage (like trailer video, put all together for grande proposal. (use livescribe? smart pen)
publish research paper:
on to web
a) KYHOI (knock your head off idea) core idea is placed on wiki page
b) relate them to each other
c) create paper together (3 paragraphs each) - learning by doing - core logical argument

access each other's and own daily (because they are publishing and want to get it right, not for a gra

need this part, if just a video product - focus is more on form and less on content
2/3 of calss
share with the world:
video/web site/ebook/etc
wesch has a youtube page displaying all his end results

note from wesch on measured results of students learning... retention was high, but more important was their success with:
1) understanding
2) ability to analyze and critique
3) ability to create (this is most important - if they were able to create in any substantial way - they had to have the 1st two)
creation has a higher level of learning that analysis, synthesis and critical thinking
and...for kids this is most important because it means their project is of use, it lives on
